PATNA: Sushil Kumar Modi has expressed the hope that languages like Bhojpuri, Magahi and Angika would be included in the list of Eighth Schedule during the course of time.

Addressing a press meet, leader of the opposition in the assembly Sushil Kumar Modi and former BJP state chief Tarakant Jha said what the Congress could not do in 45 years of its regime at the Centre, the BJP has done it in five years . ” With the inclusion of Maithili in the Eighth Schedule,  our commitment for both Maithili and Mithilanchal is complete,” remarked Modi.

Modi recalled that in 1992, the Laloo government had removed Maithili as an optional subject in state puplic service exams. “When the Patna High Court ordered the inclusion of Maithili, the RJD government appealed against the Supreme Court. Similarly, when the high court ordered teaching of Maithili as mother language, the state government again appealed to the Supreme Court,” Modi said. He challenged the Congress, an ally of the RJD government, to get the state government to t withdraw its petitions from the apex court.

He said that during the last 55 years, several persons and insititutions had agitated for the inclusion of Maithili in the Eighth Schedule. He stressed that the late Karpoori Thakur had contributed a lot for the language. He expressed the hope that other languages like Bhojpuri, Magahi and Angika would be included during the course of time.

He recalled that the Prime Minister, A B Vajpayee, had announced on June 6 while laying the foundation stone of a bridge in Nirmali that Maithili would be included in the Eighth Schedule. He stressed that the NDA government had ordered construction of seven national highways in the region besides railway projects. The Congress and the RJD did not do anything for the region, he alleged.

During the last assembly polls, the NDA lost most of the seats in Mithilanchal upsetting its calculations to win power in Bihar. Though Modi claimed that the defeat was a result of wrong selection of candidates, the BJP hopes that the fresh development will turn the tide in its favour.

He expressed the hope that other languages like Bhojpuri, Magahi and Angika would be included during the course of time.
